A New Kind of Friendship
Friendships are a crucial part of the high school experience' so much of our socialization is developed during this time. People with mental retardation are often socially isolated and do not have the opportunities to make special friends during their high school years. Best Buddies seeks to change this pattern by bringing together a historically isolated population with individuals in their community.
Mission
Best Buddies High School provides an opportunity for high school students to be matched in a one-to-one friendship with a student with mental retardation.
Benefits
,p>Buddy pairs will enjoy a special camaraderie through their friendship by spending time together whether watching sporting events, going to movies, having lunch, participating in school activities, hanging out together or even talking on the phone. Spending time with a new friend will enable your Buddy to develop greater self confidence and will help him or her to become more socially integrated within the school and community.
You will never know the impact you're making in you Buddy's life, or for that matter, the impact you are making on the community. Every time you and your Buddy go out, someone realizes that you Buddy is a capable and contributing member of society. At first that person might be you.
Club meets monthly during 6th period and has other special events throughout the year.
