Founded in 1921, the National Honor Society is recognized as
the leader among organizations and societies that promote appropriate
recognition for students who reflect outstanding accomplishments
in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, and service.
Membership is often regarded as a valid indicator that the student
will succeed in life and particularly in studies at the post-secondary
education level. The National Honor Society member has already
exhibited academic achievement, leadership, honorable and admirable
character, as well as service demonstrating that the member
is willing to use talents and skills for the improvement of
society.
The National Association of Secondary School Principals believes
that the National Honor Society has made a positive difference
in the lives of individuals and in the spirit of the community
and school.
Enrollment Periods
1. At the beginning of each school year, enrollment is open
for seniors only who must have a 3.2 unweighted, cumulative
grade-point-average. Each senior who has met the first GPA requirement
is sent a letter and an application inviting them to complete
the application. A Faculty Selection Committee reviews the applications
and makes membership acceptance decisions based on demonstrated
Service, Leadership, Scholarship, and Character.
2. At the end of the second semester, enrollment is open for
sophomores and juniors for the following school year. Each sophomore
with a 3.5 unweighted, cumulative grade-point-average and each
junior with a 3.4 gpa unweighted, cumulative grade-point-average
is sent a letter and an application inviting them to complete
the application. A faculty Selection Committee reviews the applications
and makes membership acceptance decisions based on demonstrated
Service, Leadership, Scholarship, and Character.
Induction Ceremony
The official NHS Induction Ceremony is usually held in April
and includes the newly selected seniors.
Projects
All NHS members are expected to participate in several community
projects and/or school projects. The members decide which projects
they will do. Typical projects usually include an activity for
Thanksgiving, Christmas, tutoring Winter Springs High students,
and a designated charity such as St Jude’s Hospital, Ronald
McDonald House, etc.
Benefits of Membership
There are many benefits for NHS members that will be asset to
each student today and in the future:
1. The student is recognized and honored for academic achievement,
service, leadership, scholarship, and character at school. Each
member wears a gold cord at graduation and receives a special
insignia on his/her diploma.
2. The member gains further experience in leadership and continues
to develop the appreciation and importance of community service.
3. Members learn to collaborate on new ideas, work with others,
develop action plans, and gain personal confidence.
4. NHS membership is nationally recognized for scholarship achievement
and, thus, is impressive to list on a job resume, a college
scholarship application, and a college application form.
