WSHS Thespians Ace District Competition

Congratulations to Winter Springs High School Thespian Troupe 5777!  With 31 Thespian troupes competing in one of the toughest judging years to date, Troupe 5777’s play The Remarkable Susan received Straight Superiors and placed third among the district’s One Acts, automatically sending it to the state level competition.  It was the only student directed play in the top four!  Of the nineteen independent events that Winter Springs students entered, Troupe 5777 took home one Best in Show, seven Straight Superior awards, five Superiors, and six Excellent awards.  In addition, Winter Springs High School won two Critics Choice awards, a trophy for Superior Technical Production in a One Act Play, a trophy for Superior Acting in a One Act Play, and the Thespian District Scholarship in Acting.   The competition was held at the Orange County performing arts magnet school Dr. Phillips High from January 24 – 26.

The one act play The Remarkable Susan, about the trial of Susan B. Anthony and the struggle for women’s right to vote, was brilliantly directed by senior Andrea Rumbaugh.  Critics Choice awards went to Allison Haglund, who played Susan B. Anthony, and Sandia Ahlers, who played the male judge.  The all female cast included Michelle Arok, Shamaron Batchelor, Megan Crandell, Julia Gallagher, Leland Henry, Sloane Henry, Margaret Hurt, Shayna Jones, Eryn Malafronte, Alexandra Pearson, and Brenna Warner.  The Technical Director was senior Kenny Haines.   Techs included Craig Henderson, Lauren Kapanski, Ashley Kinser, Mackenzie Muller, David Palumbo, Ben Riddick, Peter Romberg, Stevem Seguira.

This year’s Thespian District Scholarship in Acting went to WSHS Troupe 5777 senior Julia Gallagher.  

Trophies for Best in Show in the category of Pantomime went to Morgan Avery, Julia Gallagher, Eryn Malafronte, Steven Segura, and Craig Henderson for their mime “Out of Your Mime”.   Straight Superiors in Duet Musical went to Shamaron Batchelor and Lindsay Cochrane for their performance of “Some Things Are Meant To Be” from the play Little Women.  In the category of Ensemble Acting, Straight Superiors went to Michelle Arok, Jackie Houser, Eryn Malafronte, Melodie Messer, and Alexandra Pearson for their performance of a scene from The Odd Couple: Female Version.   Straight Superiors were awarded to Eileen Cowdery who performed monologues from Laughing Wild and Saint Joan, and to Julia Gallagher for monologues from The Odd Couple: Female Version and Romeo and Juliet.   Straight Superiors in Solo Musical went to Sandia Ahlers for her performance of “Nothing” from A Chorus Line, to Eileen Cowdery for “Stars and the Moon” from Songs For A New World, and to Peter Romberg for “My Unfortunate Erection” from the play The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.  

Superior in Duet Acting went to Morgan Avery and Julia Gallagher who performed a scene from the play Miss You.  Eileen Cowdery and Kevin Deese received Superior for their Duet Musical “The Song That Goes Like This” from Spamalot.  In Ensemble Acting, Superior awards went to Shamaron Batchelor, Megan Crandell, Benjamin Riddick, and Steven Segura for their scene from The Odd Couple.  Phillip Champagne received Superior for his monologues from Ascention Day and Suburbia.

Excellent in Duet Acting went to Alexandra Pearson and Andrea Rumbaugh for their scene from the play Parallel Lives, and to Brenna Warner and Alexandra Rodriguez for their performance of a scene from the play Ascension Day.  In the category of Large Group Musical, Sandia Ahlers, Michelle Arok, Shamaron Batchelor, Megan Crandell, Allison Haglund, Craig Henderson, Maragret Hurt, Shayna Jones, Ashley Kinser, Tyler Neirm, Tyler Osteen, Ali Rodriguez, Peter Romberg, Andrea Rumbaugh, Steven Seguira, and  Brenna Warner received an Excellent for their performance of “Lovely Ladies” from the play Les Miserables.  Megan Crandell was awarded an Excellent for her performance of monologues from Romeo and Juliet and An Ideal Husband.  Excellent was also awarded to Brenna Warner for her monologues from the plays Ivanov and Crimes of the Heart.  In the category of Playwriting, Michelle Arok received an Excellent for her original play Chaos on the Set.

Thespian State Competition is next on the horizon for Troupe 5777, where they hope to win against troupes from all over Florida. Thespian meet the 4th wednesday of every month in the drama room.
