three base hits. Kristen Hinkle had two hits and three
rbi’s. Also contributing to the Bears 10 hit attach were
Christine Roser with a 3 rbi double, Christa Ewasko and
Katie Mahanke with run scoring singles, and Lauren Ely and
Marissa Blake with hits. Brandi Wisniewski pitched a
complete game two-hitter for her fourth win of the season.
The Bears play Pine Ridge this evening for Senior Night.
The ceremony begins at 6:45. Please come out and celebrate
with our seniors: Jacqueline Piercefield, Brittany Memoli,
and Kristen Hinkle.
WS 3 Oviedo 2
Winter Springs High School fastpitch softball team defeated
district rival Oviedo 3-2. Brandi Wisniewski had a huge
two-out, two- strike double scoring 3 to give the Bears all
the runs they would need. After a shaky start, Richelle
Raley settled down and didn’t allow an Oviedo runner to
reach second base until the 7th inning in picking up her
5th win of the season.
WS 14 Hopkinsville, KY 1
Winter Springs fastpitch welcomed Hopkinsville, KY with a
14-1 shellacking. The Bears scored early and often putting
11 on the board in the first inning highlighted by a Brandi
Wisniewski double. Brandi pitched a complete game 5 hitter
and contributed 4 rbi’s in winning her 3rd game against no
losses. Kristen Hinkle, Marissa Blake, and Richelle Raley
also had two hits apiece with the big blow coming off
Raley’s bat as she sent a ball deep into the night for her
second homerun of the year. The Bears play tonight at Lake
Mary.
Winter Springs 4 Deland 1
Winter Springs Fastpitch softball defeated Deland 4-1 last
night behind the 3-hit pitching of Brandi Wisniewski. The
Bears took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an rbi
single by Richelle Raley. After Deland tied the game on a
pair of errors Winter Springs took the lead for good on rbi
doubles from Lauren Ely and Christine Roser. The Bears
play at home Friday versus district rival Oviedo on Friday
night. Game times are 5 for junior varsity and 7 for
varsity.
Winter Springs 5 Lake Brantley 3
The Lady Bears Fastpitch softball team ran their record to
11-3 with a 5-3 victory over Lake Brantley last night.
Christine Roser pitched a complete game 4 hitter for her
sixth win of the season. With the Bears down one Lauren
Ely hit a bloop single to score Richelle Raley. Caitlin
Cherry cleared the bases with a three-run double to give
the Bears their final edge.
Winter Springs 14 Oviedo 7
In a shootout at Oviedo High School, the Bears came out on
top 14-7. WS took an early 3-0 lead on hits by Katie
Mahanke and Brittany Memoli plus some sloppy fielding by
the Lions. Christine Roser added to this lead with her
fourth homerun of the year, a towering two-run homer. The
Bears lead 7-1 in the fifth when the Lions rallied for 6
runs on 3 hits and 4 errors. With the partisan Oviedo
crowd going crazy the Bears stepped to the plate and
answered with 7 runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Winter Springs took advantage of walks, two errors, and
four hits to retake the lead. Richelle Raley epitomized
the WS effort by beating a play at third on a come-backer
to the pitcher. Her hustle reflected the attitude of the
entire team. Christine Roser picked up the win in relief
of Richelle Raley.
Winter Springs 0 Lake Mary 7
Winter Springs got out of a first inning bases loaded jam
giving up only one run and looked to have some momentum. A
combination of good pitching from Lake Mary’s Hope Bitzer
and a wild strike zone; however, kept the Bears in check
all night. The Bears’ only serious threat came in the
third when Lauren Ely and Brittany Memoli singled and a
walk loaded the bases with two outs. Lake Mary managed to
retire the dangerous Kristen Hinkle to end the threat.
Winter Springs 6 Lake Brantley 1
The Bears took control early and kept Lake Brantley’s quick
runners off base most of the game. Raley and Roser
contributed run-scoring doubles and the defense turned a
double play in support of Roser’s four hitter.
Winter Springs 6 Apopka 2
The Bears, playing on the concrete-like surface of Apopka’s
infield, committed 8 fielding errors and a throwing error
in the victory. Despite giving the fourth-ranked Blue
Darters 8 extra base-runners the Bears made the plays when
they had to. Richelle Raley singled in a run to give WS
the early lead. Apopka scored two in the bottom on a walk,
a single, and two errors to take the lead. In a epic
battle of two of the region’s top players, Christine Roser
lead off the sixth against Apopka ace Stephanie Owen.
Roser fouled off the first two pitches immediately putting
herself in a hole. After taking a pitch outside, Roser hit
a ball that cleared the left field fence just foul. Owens
came back with three straight outside pitches with Roser
fouling off each. On the eighth pitch of the at bat
Christine hit a towering shot over the left field wall for
her fifth homerun of the year tying the game at 2-2. The
Bears used that momentum to score 4 times in the top of the
ninth to seal the game. Brittany Memoli and Kristen Hinkle
singled to start the frame. Marissa Blake then singled
Memoli home with the runners advancing on the throw. Roser
walked and Raley lined out hard the the right fielder.
Brandi Wisniewski bounced a single through the middle
scoring Hinkle and Blake. Lauren Ely scored courtesy
runner Caitlin Cherry on a chopper to short to end the
scoring. Christine Roser tossed a 4 hitter in netting her
sixth win against one loss this season.
Winter Springs 4 Seminole 1
The Bears journeyed to Sanford and avenged an earlier
season 12-inning loss to the 9th ranked ‘Noles. Sheena
Ware doubled in Amy Joyce to give Seminole an early 1-0
lead. That lead would stand until Christa Ewasko singled
in Caitlin Cherry and Lauren Ely with two-outs in the top
of the fourth. The Bears staunch defense and gutty
pitching by Richelle Raley kept Seminole off the bases for
much of the night. WS added a run in the top of the sixth
on another two-out single by Christine Pulliam scoring Ely
who had a bunt single to go with a double, and a sacrifice
fly in the seventh by Raley scoring Kristen Hinkle who had
hustled out an infield hit to give the Bears their final
run.
Feb 14th -
Winter Springs High School participated in the Lake Mary
Early Bird Tournament last weekend. Although the Bears
dropped their opening game to Eau Gallie 3-1, they fought
back to beat defending state champion Palm Harbor 3-2 in 8
innings, West Orange 10-3, and were leading Edgewater 6-0
in the third inning before the games were cancelled due to
inclement weather.
In Friday night’s opening round game, Eau Gallie used two
homeruns to score their three runs. WS made a run in the
bottom of the sixth. Heather Knoop drove a 2-1 pitch into
deep right center for a pinch-hit double. Christine Roser
singled in pinch runner Katie Mahanke for the Bears only
run. With runners on second and third, Eau Gallie managed
to retire the next two batters to preserve the win.
Kristen Hinkle and Jacqueline Piercefield also added
doubles for the Bears. Brittany Memoli threw a runner out
at third to keep the Bears in the game.
On a chilly Saturday morning, the Bears faced Palm Harbor.
PH scored first on consecutive hits by their first three
hitters but the Bears managed to get out of a no out bases
loaded situation. Brandi Wisniewski doubled, moved to
third on a bunt by Lauren Ely, and scored on a past ball to
tie the game. Christine Roser took over pitching and shut
Palm Harbor’s potent bats down until the bottom of the
sixth when she gave up a double and single to go down 2-1.
Pinch hitter Caitlin Cherry drew a walk to lead off the
seventh and was sacrificed to second by Brittany Memoli.
Kristen Hinkle singled to right to advance the runner who
scored on a Christine Roser ground out. The game was
decided in the 8th by the Texas Tie-Breaker. Richelle
Raley advanced to third on a bunt by Wisniewski. Lauren
Ely singled her in for the go ahead run. The Bears threw a
runner out at the plate in the 8th and at second to secure
the win.
Winter Springs played West Orange in the early afternoon
game. The Bears scored quickly with three runs in the
first led by Hinkle and Roser. Brandi Wisniewski hit her
first career homerun and Christine Roser added a majestic
three run homer to put the game away. Richelle Raley
pitched 7 innings for her first win of the season as the
Bears triumphed 10-3.
Ely, Raley, and Roser all had rbi’s against Edgewater to
put the Bear’s up 6-0 before the game was halted in the
bottom of the third.
Monday the Bears traveled to Deland High School for the
first game on the Bulldogs new field. After the honorary
first pitch thrown by Deland’s principal, Winter Springs
started the scoring. Kristen Hinkle reached first on a
catcher’s error and eventually scored. Richelle Raley hit
her first homerun as a Bear scoring Brittany Memoli and
Katie Mahanke in front of her to make the score 4-0. The
hitting did not stop there, Christa Ewasko doubled and
scored; Heather Knoop hit a two-run pinch hit double;
Christine Roser and Brandi Wisniewski both went 2-3 with a
double each. The Bears finished the game 8-0 as Roser
recorded her third win of the season and her second career
no-hitter.
Feb 9th - Winter Springs Fastpitch Softball began its season last
night with an 11-3 victory over district foe Lyman High
School. Christine Roser pitched 5 and 2/3 innings giving
up three hits while striking out nine. Roser also became
the career leader in home runs with a titanic three-run
blast in the bottom of the sixth. Brandi Wisniewski struck
out three of the four batters she faced and contributed two
hits to the Bears’ cause. Also coming up big for Winter
Springs was Lauren Ely with two hits and three runs scored,
Kristen Hinkle with two hits and three rbi’s, Richelle
Raley with a towering double down the left field line, and
Katie Mahanke with a single in her first at bat as a
Bear.
The junior varsity also continued its winning ways with a
15-0 shutout of Lyman.
