Girls Soccer Going to the Final Four

Poster Created by Jim Marshall
Girls soccer senior Vanessa Aponte, has recently been competing for the Colombian Under-20 Womens's National team, as they attempted to qualify for the FIFA Under-20 Wormen's World Cup. These world championships for the Under 20 age group, will be held in Germany this summer. Last week, Vanessa scored the winning goal against Bolivia, which was hailed throughout Colombia. Yesterday the team defeated Paraguay, which put them in the final against Brazil. By virtue of getting to the final (this Wednesday) the team qualifies for this summer's World Cup! Congratulations to Vanessa on a great accomplishment, and being the first Winter Springs soccer player to compete on the world stage!

The girls soccer team headed to Flagler Palm Coast in rough weather Friday night, to play in their first Regional Final. Bears were seeking to secure a spot in the state 6A Final Four. Coming off a big emotional win over Oviedo, the team picked up where they left off.; With just 6 minutes gone, Vanessa Aponte dropped a pass to Meredith Ciocca who sent a long shot past the Bulldogs goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.; The Bears continued to pressure Flagler, not allowing their forwards a chance to gain a foothold. Coming out of the halftime break, with the winds pushing 25mph, the Bears continue to press and with 10 minutes left, Vanessa Aponte sent a corner kick in front of the Flagler goal. A mad scramble for the ball, ended up with junior Megan Wilson knocking it in for the second goal! The team held strong in the closing minutes and despite giving up a late goal, the Bears prevailed as Regional Champions!!! The team will now travel to the University of Tampa on Friday, to take on Boca Raton in the first semi-final at 3pm. The winner will move to the 6A State Championship game on Saturday, 4pm. Congratulations girls, GO WIN STATE!!!!

On Saturday Jan 16th, the girls varsity soccer team took a break from competition, to work with some great athletes. For the second year, the girls volunteered with the Special Olympics soccer program in Seminole County. The girls worked on soccer skills with the athletes, but also made new friends. It was a fun and rewarding experience for them, a chance to understand just how fortunate they are.
